Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, is a common digestive issue. It occurs when acid from the stomach flows back up to the esophagus. It can cause heartburn, indigestion and throat burning. There are many medications that can be used to treat GERD. However, it is best for you to try to treat this condition with diet first. There are many foods that can worsen GERD symptoms:
1. Citrus fruits
Citrus fruits can be a part of a healthy diet. However, if you have GERD, then it is a good idea for you to cut back on these fruits. These foods are highly acidic. Oranges, lemons and grapefruits are some of the foods that you should add to your diet.
2. Onions or garlic
Onions and garlic make a nice addition to many dishes. However, there is a link between onions or garlic and GERD. These foods can sit in your stomach for a long time, which can stimulate the production of gastric acid. Your symptoms may not be as bad if you cook the onions before you eat them, but the acid will still form.
3. Coffee
If you normally drink coffee in the morning, then it is a good idea for you to limit your intake of it. The caffeine can trigger GERD symptoms. It is also important to note that switching to decaf may not necessarily get rid of your GERD symptoms. The ingredients in the beverage itself can trigger GERD. However, your symptoms may not be as bad if you drink a lighter roast. Darker roasts tend to be more acidic.
4. Chocolate
Chocolate is a nice treat. However, it can worsen your GERD symptoms. The cocoa can increase the production of serotonin. This can cause your esophageal sphincter to relax. It can also cause the contents of the stomach to move up to the throat. Additionally, the cocoa powder is acidic.
5. Red wine
Alcohol is something that you will need to avoid if you suffer from GERD. Red wine is often praised for its health benefits, but it can worsen GERD. It has a tendency to irritate the lining of the esophagus. It can also increase the production of acid. Keep in mind that white wine isn’t better for acid reflux than the red kind.
6. Spicy foods
Hot peppers, curry, black pepper, salsa and curry are examples of spicy foods. If you eat something that is spicy, then it can irritate your esophagus. Your esophagus is already irritated if you suffer from GERD. These foods also have capsaicin in them. This has a tendency to slow down the rate of digestion. The food will sit in your stomach for a longer period of time. The longer the food sits in your stomach, the more likely you will be to suffer from heartburn.
