Early Warning Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Early Warning Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Usually, people with breast cancer experience different symptoms. Many women do not have any early signs or symptoms of breast cancer. However, in most women, the typical early warning sign of breast cancer is seen as forming the lump in the armpit or breast. Other than that, women might experience a change in the skin color, inward nipples, pain in breasts, and unusual nipple discharge.

Early warning symptoms of breast cancer
Some of the common early warning signs of breast cancer are:

Lumps
A lump in the armpit or the collarbone is the first sign of breast cancer. However, many women tend to have a lumpy breast. It is typically because the breast tissue tends to be lumpy in its texture. However, the lumpiness varies and might not always be indicative of underlying cancer. So, examine both your breasts. If the lumpiness feels even in both of them, it might not be cancerous. However, if a person notices any of these issues, they must visit a doctor:

  • Noticeable changes in the texture of the breasts, which may not be linked to the woman’s menstrual cycle
  • Harder lump, which feels unlike the other areas of the breasts
  • Presence of lump in only one breast

The lump may be cancerous if:

  • Its edges are uneven
  • It is painless or hard

However, in some women, lumps can be rounded, soft, and tender.

Nipple discharge
Another common sign of breast cancer is nipple discharge. However, nipple discharge might also result from:

  • An infection
  • Squeezing of the nipples

The person should visit a doctor if the:

  • Discharge is seen without any squeezing
  • Discharge is only in one breast
  • Discharge is bloody

However, regardless of the discharge being cancerous or not, it would require treatment.

Swelling near the collarbone or in the armpit
If there is swelling, it is clear that cancer has spread and has reached the lymph nodes. In some women, the swelling might start even before you feel any lump.

An indented or flat area on the breast
The indented area might occur because of a tumor, which is not visible to the naked eye. You might also not feel this tumor.

Changes in the breast
Women who have breast cancer notice several changes in the contour, size, temperature, or texture of the breasts.

Changes in nipple
During breast cancer, the nipples, too, might undergo several changes. These include:

  • It burns or itches frequently
  • Nipple pulls inward
  • There are sores on the nipple
  • The nipple becomes dimpled

Other early warning signs
In addition to these, you might experience a few other signs, which might indicate breast cancer. These include:

  • Appearance of the marble-like area beneath the skin
  • Redness, swelling, or darkening of the breasts
  • Appearance of prominent veins on the breasts
