Different Types of Lymphoma

There are two primary types of lymphoma, that is NHL or Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and HL or Hodgkin’s lymphoma. People who have Hodgkin’s lymphoma have giant cancerous cells known as the RS cells (Reed-Sternberg). However, those who have the NHL do not have cancerous cells. Read on to know more about the types of lymphoma.

NHL
As per studies, NHL is approximately thrice more prevalent than HL. Most of the types of lymphoma are of this category. The type of NHL depends upon the cells they affect. NHL develops either in the T-cells or the B-cells of the immune system. B-cell NHL is more common than the T-cell NHL.

  • T-cell NHL

Only 15% of people with NHL have T-cell NHL.

  • B-cell NHL

It is an aggressive form of NHL that occurs when unhealthy B cells develop in the blood. If left untreated, B-cell NHL can be fatal.

  • Follicular NHL

Approximately 20% of people in the country are diagnosed with follicular lymphoma. It begins in the WBCs (white blood cells), and It progresses slowly. Furthermore, it is more prevalent in older adults.

  • Burkitt’s NHL

It is a rare type of NHL, which is aggressive. It is found in people with a compromised immune system.

  • Mantle cell NHL

Though aggressive, it is a rare type of NHL. Of the total NHL cases, only 6% of people have this type of NHL. Unfortunately, this lymphoma is not diagnosed until its later stages. It primarily involves the bone marrow or the gastrointestinal tract.

  • Primary mediastinal B cell NHL

It is a B-cell subtype and mostly found in young women in the age range from 20 to 30.

  • Small lymphocytic NHL

It is a slow progressing lymphoma. In this type of NHL, unhealthy cancer cells are present in the lymph nodes.

  • Lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma

It is an uncommon lymphoma, and only about 1-2% of people with lymphoma have this type of NHL.

  • Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia

It is a type of lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma and leads to the abnormal development of antibodies.
Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HL)

It primarily originates in the RS cells of the immune system or the B-cells.

  • Mixed cellularity HL

It contains both RS cells and lymphocytes, and almost one-fourth of all HL cases belong to this type of lymphoma. It is more common in older men.

  • Lymphocyte-rich HL

It is more prevalent in men. Of the total HL cases, only 5% are of this type.

  • Nodular sclerosis HL

It is the most common form of lymphoma and is seen in 70% of people with HL.

  • Lymphocyte-depleted HL

It is a rare type of HL and is seen in only 1% of all lymphoma patients in their 30s.
